... wir beide haben es nicht für möglich gehalten,  aber nun ist es geschehen: Großbritannien hat sich für den Austritt aus der EU entschieden. Ein trauriger Tag für Europa – ein trauriger Tag für uns. Erinnerst du dich noch an die Debatten von Andreas und Fabian zum Europatag? Alle möglichen negativen Folgen – wirtschaftlich, politisch und kulturell – wurden da benannt. Was wird nun wirklich eintreffen? Wie werden wir persönlich diese Auswirkungen spüren?  Wie gut, dass dein Aufenthalt als Fremdsprachenassistentin vor dieser Entscheidung lag und du unbelastet dein Auslandsjahr genießen konntest.

Ich bin sicher, dass der europäische Gedanke-  das Gemeinsame unserer Länder und Kulturen zu betonen  und  Toleranz und Wertschätzung gegenüber den wichtigen und schönen kleinen Unterschieden zu zeigen  - nur durch die Menschen lebt und nicht allein von politischen Willenserklärungen abhängig ist. Nur die Begegnung, der Austausch mit Menschen kann helfen Vorurteile abzubauen und Gemeinsames aufzubauen. Auch die EU ist jetzt gefordert, die gemeinsamen europäischen Werte in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen und neu über ihre Rolle gegenüber den einzelnen Nationen nachzudenken.

Du hast uns ein Stück junges und modernes  Großbritannien gezeigt und wir haben dir ein Stück Deutschland näher gebracht. Das bleibt uns allen - und die Hoffnung, dass die junge Generation, die ja erwiesenermaßen in den Umfragen pro EU gestimmt hat, auch die Zukunft in neue Bahnen lenken kann.

Dear Kate,

We both have not considered it possible, but now it's done: Britain has decided to leave the EU. A sad day for Europe - a sad day for us. Do you remember the debates with Andreas and Fabian for our European Day? Any potential negative consequences - economically, politically and culturally - were stated then. What will actually arrive? How will we personally feel this impact? You were lucky that your stay as a foreign language assistant was prior to this decision and you could enjoy your year abroad.

I am sure that the European idea-  to emphasize the similarities of our countries and cultures and to show tolerance and appreciation for the important and beautiful small differences - lives only through the people and is not only dependent on political declarations. Only the encounter, the exchange with people can help to reduce prejudices and build common values. The EU is now supposed to focus on the common European values and rethink its role towards the individual nations.

You showed us a piece of young and modern Britain and we have brought you closer to a piece of Germany. That remains to all of us - and the hope that the young generation, which has indeed proven to be pro EU in the polls, may change the future of Great Britain and the EU.
