Let’s hope for the best.
Brexit debate
During our school’s annual European Day on 3rd May we, Mr. Fabian Kohrs and Mr. Andreas Germann, were tasked with having a topical debate regarding the Brexit - meaning the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. The goal we hoped to achieve was to further a broader understanding for the subject matter in students.
In total 10 debates for different classes took place. One of us was a self- proclaimed Brexit enthusiast and the other fought for the UK to stay within the EU. The arguments ranged from economics to security concerns as well as the cultural impacts that could result from a Brexit. The debates were timed at 10-15 minutes. Because of a broad spectrum of different arguments nearly every debate took a different turn to the preceding one. As soon as one debate ended it was time for the listeners to cast their votes so we could have a representative study of the OSZ 2 Potsdam students’ opinion on the matter.
And then the results were in. A total of approximately 293 votes were cast, with the results clearly in favor of the UK’s remainder in the EU by 219 votes opposed to 74 votes for the Brexit.
To summarize, the students of the OSZ 2 Potsdam mainly wish for the UK’s remainder in the EU, however, the 74 votes in favour of the Brexit also show that opinions are varied. The entire experience was rewarding for students and teachers alike. Even now we are looking forward to the next European Day celebration.
